Ferry Crossing Warning! (Continued from Home Page)
I have travelled overseas using my bike on ferries many times over the years and have never had a problem until my last trip to France. Travelling there using the Seafrance crossing from Dover to Calais was no problem, but on my return trip from Calais to Dover and after riding up from Brittany it was a different matter.
I was tired after riding such a long distance and it had been raining from the start. The cold was beginning to get to me, after all, it was February! All I could think of was getting onto the ferry and getting myself a nice hot cuppa to warm myself up. I arrived at the ferry terminal in Calais and managed to get on an earlier ferry than the one I was originally booked on. I positioned my bike in the motorcycle supports and waited for the crewmen to strap my bike down. I was so tired, I only checked to make sure the bike was secure and didn't pay any attention to where the straps had been placed, because that cuppa and warmth was calling out to me.
The crossing was fairly calm and I returned to my bike on arrival in Dover feeling much warmer. I sat on my bike and waited for a crewman to unhook the straps and it was only when he was doing so, that I noticed the straps hadn't been positioned over my bike with the hooks secured to the padeyes on the deck, the hooks had been attached to my frame on either side of my bike and had chipped my paintwork. Naturally, saying I was not pleased is a bit of an understatement. After complaing to the crewman, he just shrugged and said...'It was not me'. I told him I will be emailing Seafrance immediately on my arrival home.
This is exactly what I did and after a few emails to and fro, they have basically said, as I have no proof and I did not obtain a complaint form whilst onboard or had any witnesses, they don't have to pay for the damage.
So after going to BMW (sorry, forgot to mention my bike is a K1200R) and having a quote for the damage, BMW also told me that these bikes should not under any circumstance be secured in that manner, as it can cause subframe damage. They recommended that to be on the safe side, the subframe should be replaced, but naturally this comes at a cost...like just under £700 type of cost...all because some useless and probably un-trained crewman strapped my bike down incorrectly... and I am now the one who has to cover the costs! Is this fair?
So...Please, please, please, if you are going on a ferry this summer, firstly, ensure they strap your bike safely and correctly. Secondly, if they do cause damage, don't get off that ferry until you have witnesses, claim forms, photographs, the lot.
If you have had similar problems, let me know and I'll post them here for all to see.

The engine was a four-stroke internal-combustion engine, developed nearly a decade before it was used on the first motorbike. This is the first known instance of a motorized bicycle in history.
